BLACC Oral History Project Photo Collection
These images are associated with the Black Legacy Association of Columbia County (BLACC) Collection and may have been maintained for the preparation of the interviews conducted from 1987 to 1989. The files include legal agreements, letters, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, book chapters, organization publications, and photographs. They also represent, in some cases, photographs and other memorabilia donated to the project by the interviewees.
Materials were donated by Columbia Opportunities, Inc. to the library in 2018. All of the material in this collection was assembled by the Columbia County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by Columbia Opportunities, Incorporated (COI). In 2019, the library was awarded an Accelerating Promising Practices for Small Libraries grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a collaborative project with Oral History Summer School (OHSS) to create interplay between this collection, the library’s oral history collection, and the 500+ life histories in the OHSS collection.

Photo found in Mrs. John Tucker’s house, 433 State St. by present occupant, Otelia Rainer. The picture (probably from around 1900) shows a Sunday School class with their teacher on the old front steps of the former AME Zion Church at 2nd and State St., Hudson.
Mystery child! Photo found in trunk at 433 State St., Hudson, NY. Either the owner of the pony or the child’s father is crouched at left adjusting the girth. Does anyone know this child?
Robert Williams-Hon discharge papers from Naval Service; notice of pension increase by $35/month beginning 6/10/1916 signed by Sec. of the Interior Franklin K. Lane. Mr. Williams was Helen Dago’s grandfather and lived on Spring St. He served in both the Confederate & Union Navies and was listed as “First Class Boy.” He had been a clerk on the Confederate ship ALBEMARLE and the USS HETZEL.

This baby chair made by Helen Dago’s grandfather, Robert Williams, after the Civil War. It has been used by every generation’s children since. NOTE: worn foot rest.
Late 1880’s household items. Women scrubbed clothes on metal washboards to clean them. Sprinkled water on clothes from the bottle shown to dampen items before ironing them. The heavy cast iron was heated on the stove to warm it before pressing clothes. The clothespin was hand-carved and pinned laundry items to a clothesline outdoors. The strange metal pad and roller was used, after heating, to iron ruffles. All items from Helen Dago’s family that lived on Spring Street.
